There are lots of differences between dog breeds. When it comes to their eyes, most dogs have brown eyes but there are a few breeds with blue eyes. Let’s have a look at those blue eyed doggies.
Siberian Husky
This breed is one of the first ones that comes to people’s minds when thinking of dog breeds with blue eyes. It is very common in Huskies to have blue eyes but there are also ones with brown or mixed eye colors.
Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds are known for their soft and colorful merle fur but also for their blue eyes. You’ll see that merle gene is often connected to blue eyes in dog breeds.
Weimaraner
With their usual grey fur, Weimaraners also often have blue eyes. Mostly this is while they are puppies and can turn brown later in life. Some might still keep their blue eyes throughout their lives.
Dalmatian
The first thing one thinks of with this breed are the beautiful many spots on their fur. Not often but sometimes, Dalmatians will have blue eyes. Blue eyes in this breed can be a warning sign for deafness.
Border Collie
Most Border Collies have brown eyes, but there are some that can have blue eyes as well.
Cardigan Welsh Corgi
With merle coats similar to some Australian Shepherds, they often have blue eyes.
Great Dane
A lot of Great Dane puppies are born with blue eyes. Often those turn brown over time but sometimes those blue eyes stay. This happens especially if they have merle fur.
German Shepherd
While German Shepherds usually have brown eyes, they can occasionally have one or two blue eyes.. It is very rare. It is often considered that those rare blue eyed German Shepherds have a mix in them of another breed with blue eyes or due to a genetic variance.
Mixed breed dogs can of course also have one or two blue eyes, usually due to their mix with one or more of the breeds above.
Sometimes it is hard to know what kind of mix you got, especially when you adopted a doggie from a shelter. However, if your dog has blue eyes, it is very likely that it is mixed with one of the breeds mentioned. Maybe you can tell from other features which it could be.
If you want to find out what kind of mix your adopted doggie is, we suggest trying one of our favorite dog DNA tests. You can find out what mix and even what health implications your pup might have.
